Creating a Description for Your eBook

Mitch Woodhead

July 16, 2013

Congratulations! You have written your ebook! You have also chosen a highly searchable title, and you are well on your way to being an indie author superstar. Right? Not yet. There are a few more steps you must take to be sure that your ebook is visible to readers who search for it online, and one of the most important steps is to create a description for your ebook. The description for your ebook needs to be not only informative, letting readers know what the book contains, but it also needs to be smartly written, to include the types of words and phrases that people might use to search for a book on the topic you’ve written. While it can be tough to convey everything you want to in the title of your book, the description for your ebook can contain a great deal more information about what the book is about. Think about who will be interested in your book and what they will search for online. Did you write the next Fifty Shades of Grey? Then be sure to refer to your book as such in the description. Is your book on a rare but interesting topic, such as how to understand or interpret Nietzsche by studying Battlestar Galactica? Make sure that your description includes the relevant terms. Create a variety of descriptions of different lengths, from 160 characters for a Twitter account to a full page description that you can put on your website. As you market your ebook, you’ll discover a number of different places you can list your ebook, and having the description for your ebook already prepared can make the entire process easier. In our next post, we’ll discuss why reviews are important and how to get them.
