Indie Author: Get Out of Your Head and Start Writing

indie authorsBefore you put your pen to paper (or your fingers to the keyboard), your eBook begins first and foremost in the minds of indie authors. While your ability to think critically is your most valuable tool, it can also be your worst enemy. It’s all too easy to over-analyze and second-guess your eBook ideas, hindering any real progress. Those are the moments when indie authors need to think less – get out of your head – and consider a few realities about writing. Unwritten work is always brilliant That idea you’ve got rolling around in your head is essentially flawless, with all of the potential to be brilliant. And the excitement for writing that you enjoy may mix with the terrifying reality that such an eBook can’t even be written. Nothing will compare with what you’ve built in your mind, and you may find yourself avoiding your most golden thoughts. However, an unwritten idea will never be successful. Even if your ambitious dreams don’t quite mirror reality, you can develop something better along the way. Not all thoughts are profound The other problem with being too engrossed in your own thoughts is that you may avoid writing altogether. Some indie writers assume that if they can’t come up with a profound question or topic, then they have nothing worth writing about. If you’re hung up on the notion that you only have a few small ideas, begin experimenting with those and see where they take you. You may be surprised at how far a simple thought, supposedly trivial in your mind, can travel. Even profound thoughts can be wrong There are indie authors who indeed happen to have a profound thought in their heads. The hardest questions are always the hardest to answer, and you may stump yourself with a topic that is just too big. Rather than becoming frustrated with a weighty idea and the questions that come with it, treat your writing as a learning experience. Research as you write, enjoying those moments of exploration. Discovering whether your idea turns out to be right or wrong is part of the journey. A larger idea also has the potential to be an entire series of eBooks, which is well worth the time and effort. Writing is a process that requires a great deal of thought. However, getting too caught up in your own head can shelve what could be a fantastic eBook. A finished product comes from trusting your instincts and letting the words flow, and those words can develop into an eBook much more quickly when they are on paper. Now get out of your head and write, indie authors.
